Amazing trip with Heather to Matanuska Glacier in Alaska.
The Glacier
This photo was taken a way back from the glacier to give some perspective and scope. Most places in Alaska are vast and pictures fall short of showing that
A View of A Life Time
No kidding, this picture is from the window of our hotel room at Majestic Heli Ski. Heather has been doing design work with them for many years and they were nice enough to treat us to a night near the glacier in their lodge. Fantastic.
Hi, Heather!
One must be vigilant at all times on the glaciers. One wrong step and it can be a very bad day. We used poles to check before each step.
trying to give scope
this place is really big, like most places in Alaska, the scope rarely translates in photo.
nightmare mud
super don’t want to fall into this stuff
silt meets ice
I think this is the edge of the retraction site where the glacier is receding.
heather near the top
again, we did not linger up here. The sounds coming from the glacier were disconcerting!
crystal lakes and ice melt
while it is cold, there is run-off and quite a bit of sink holes.
this is an ice rock that looked cool
i thought it was neat how the mud froze the shapes and colors together
deep frozen ice and ancient frost
the age of these glaciers is truly remarkable
the perfect angle
notice everything is frozen?
a freezing mud pit
not really a spa day environment, this mud is deadly
an alien world with unforgiving landscape
The beauty is undeniable and the feeling of insignificance in the universe is humbling
a view from the apex
while not the tip-top of the ice formation, it is as high as we could safely go
the tip of the galcier
We had to ice “climb” a little to get to this spot but the view was worth it. Except, the deep booming and cracking sounds were a little disturbing
I look like a European explorer
I seem to have a very “Everest” look in this picture. Feel like I would be Swiss? German?
